Matthew Casarez

At Tuesday’s, January 24, City Council Meeting, council members voted unanimously to enter a design consulting agreement with Peter’s Engineering Group for up to $83,380, regarding a new traffic signal on Reed Avenue at the Northernmost entrance to Reedley College. Council members and residents did raise concern and interest in the proposed intersection regarding traffic and access to Kip Patrick Drive leading City officials to pitch future discussions with affected residents. The City had already appropriated $600,000 to fund the signal while Kings Canyon Unified has agreed to provide $150,000 and State Center Community College District providing $150,000 along with $100,000 for changes in contract costs.

Council members also voted unanimously to renew and extend the prohibition on new smoke shops and tobacco stores in the City of Reedley through January 10, 2024, while the city works to review the zoning code. Three smoke shops currently exist in the city.

After a mid-year review of the city budget, council members amended the budget and appropriated $1,556,526 for several programs and projects.

Details on the appropriations were provided in the meeting agenda:

Additionally, council members approved $23,100 from the general fund to replace 500-700 deteriorating bricks at the Reedley Opera House. Although the building is owned by the City of Reedley, operations are managed by the Reedley River City Theatre Company.
