Chamber's Fitness Expo on April 1 receives $10,000 sponsorship from Sierra Kings

Reedley Chamber of Commerce’s 2nd Annual Health and Fitness Expo received a $10,000 sponsorship from Sierra Kings Health Care District at Tuesday’s meeting. For the fiscal year 2022-2023, which runs through the summer, $50,000 is budgeted for special initiatives. So far, the health care district has allocated $38,000 of that to the following; $500 for the hydration station at Reedley Fiesta’s 5K Run, $16,050 for the Fall Farmer’s Market at Reedley College, $19,150 for the Spring Farmer’s Market at Reedley College, and $2,500 for Holiday Food Stipends. With the unanimous approval of the $10,000 sponsorship to Reedley Chamber, $1,800 is left for the remaining of the fiscal year for special initiatives.

In a proposal sent to Sierra Kings, Reedley Chamber detailed how it would use the $10,000; $2,500 for free booth space for 25 community groups, $2,500 to rent a 40’ by 80’ canopy, $1,500 for a stage rental, $1,500 to rent a children’s activities course bounce house, and $2,000 for outreach marketing.

According to the Sierra Kings’ staff assessment, the sponsorship intends to “bolster outreach” and increase the participation of the general public while working to “increase knowledge of healthy preparation of seasonal fruits and vegetables”.

The government entity was formed in 1962 to operate the Sierra Kings Hospital and would move forward operating several clinics in the region. In a 2006 election, voters approved a $20 million bond that aimed to renovate the hospital. Three years later, Sierra Kings Hospital filed for bankruptcy. Voters then approved Measure G in 2011 with 95% of the vote which permitted Sierra Kings Health Care District to lease, with an option to sell, its assets. Adventist Health purchased the rural health clinics, along with the equipment, and entered the lease of the property at 372 W Cypress Avenue in Reedley. Since then, the district has made efforts to focus on issuing community-based grants to support and promote health in the community.

In the fiscal year of 2021, Sierra Kings Health Care District budgeted $41,854 for grants to organizations throughout the community after budgeting over $1.5 million in revenue.

In the fiscal year of 2022, the budget for grants increased to $93,631 and for the fiscal year of 2023, board members approved to budget $265,000 in community grants out of the $1.5 million in revenue. This budgeted revenue totals from 1,079,305 in lease payments from Adventist Health, 12,747 from ground leases, and 492,000 from property taxes. The remaining funds are directed to operating expenditures details in the budget below with details of expenses available to skhcd.com.

The sponsored Health and Fitness Expo will be held on April 1 and 2, 2023. Additional information is available at https://reedleychamber.com/.
