$58,000+ Las Vegas trip approved by KCUSD School Board, conference aimed to improve learning culture

At the May 9th school board meeting, members unanimously, except for board member Sara Rola who was absent, approved an out-of-state conference for certain district staff members to attend the Professional Learning Communities at Work Institute conference in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Caesars Forum where according to the event flyer, the conference is aimed to help “build school culture where learning thrives”.

Reedley Memo reached out to School Board President Robin Tyler about the trip and costs but did not receive any response. Instead, Reedley Memo’s Matthew Casarez sat down with KCUSD’s outgoing Chief Financial Officer Adele Nikkel who could not provide hotel costs but did provide documentation for the conference's registration fee that included a paid total of $58,422.00.


The May meeting also included the routine purchase agreements totaling $2,337,096.27 spent in eleven days which included: $48,362.02 at Amazon.com for various items ranging from classroom supplies, business office supplies, and furniture. In the billing cycle before, the school district spent $57,026.63 at Amazon.com.


$21,620.94 at Office Depot for administrative office supplies and classroom supplies. $5,073.89 at Home Depot for materials, parts, and supplies, $1,611.80 at Save Mart Supermarkets for “Parent Engagement Supplies” as stated by the school district, and $1,248.75 to Mid Valley Publishing (the parent company of the Reedley Exponent) for Bid Advertisements.
